The Boeman or Boezeman (alternatively known as the "Boevent," "Boekaros," "Boezejeude," "Beukél," "Beukérel," "Boozenkeerl," "Malle Kiel," "Malle Kerel," "Donkere Vent" or "Den Padderen") is a Dutch version of the Boogey Man. Originally he was known as the Boezeman, meaning he was noisy - which he could be - but his name was later bastardized to Boeman (translation: Boo Man).[1] He was known to be the culprit of a number of things all through the Netherlands. Some people said the Boeman kidnapped misbehaving children late at night[2], others said he pulled children into the water. Again other say he's a malicious house spirit. Oftentimes Boeman is just a synonym for Child Terror.
In Limburg the Boeman is known as the "Beukél" or "Beukérel"; a tall dark man wearing a chain that makes a faint clinging sound. Similar to the Pikkepoot, he walks by the houses at night.[3]
In Zeeland the Boeman was best know to be a Water Terror.[4]
Vlaanderen has its own story about the Boeman. They say he carries a big jute bag, which he uses to capture children and drag them to hell with.
